    Attachments and media

Add images, PDFs and other files to a note, embed them inline, and manage them from the media panel.

Keep the files a note depends on right next to it. inkwell copies attachments into your vault, so they travel with your notes.

Add a file to a note

There are three ways, depending on what you’re adding.

Paste an image. Copy an image, click into the note and paste. inkwell saves it as a file in the assets folder of your vault and embeds it where your cursor is.

Use the toolbar. The floating toolbar at the bottom of the editor has three buttons:

    Button What it does
Insert image from URL Paste the address of an image on the web. It must point straight to an image, not to a webpage.
Upload image from computer Pick an image file. inkwell copies it into the vault’s attachments folder.
Attach file or document (PDF, Word, etc.) Pick any file. It’s copied into attachments too.

Use the media panel. Click the paperclip (Media & attachments) at the top-right of the note, then Add file or document.

When you pick a file, inkwell won’t overwrite an existing one. A second report.pdf is saved as report (1).pdf.

    Embed a file inline

Attached files appear inside the note as an embed, which is a line like this:

The three parts, separated by |, are the file’s path inside the vault, the name to display, and its size in bytes. inkwell draws this as a collapsible block in the editor, so images show as pictures and other files can be opened.

If you use Obsidian, ![[filename]] also works. inkwell finds a file of that name anywhere in your vault, so you don’t need to type the folder.

See everything attached to a note

Click the paperclip at the top-right of the note to open the Media panel. Files are grouped under Images, Video and Documents & Files, each with its name and size.

    • Click a name, or the Open with system app icon, to open the file in your computer’s default app.
    • Click Remove attachment (the bin icon) to remove it.

Which files belong to which note is recorded in the vault’s hidden .inkwell/app.json. If you sync your vault with another tool, include that folder so attachments stay connected to their notes.
